Debating teaches you to make compelling arguments, scrutinise others’ ideas, defend yourself from attacks, and to persuade an audience of your point of view.
This will not only prepare students to excel in debating, but to improve their writing, presentations, leadership, and social skills.
Debating teaches more than just how to win arguments. It trains students how to think on their feet, communicate their views, empathise and understand competing viewpoints, and grow interpersonal social skills.
Finding our voice in this world is incredibly difficult and a daunting task, especially to those of us whose self-confidence doesn’t come naturally. We often find ourselves getting talked over, and later at home, replay the different ways we could have stood up for ourselves better.
When we find ourselves in a debate or an argument, we often get flustered, not thinking clearly, and not communicating effectively.
Though debating a form of discourse involves a moderator with two opposing teams arguing on competing viewpoints of a given topic, the skills students learn from it are far greater than what’s used in the classroom.
Students learn to process information, think quickly, logically, and critically, and voice their opinions when it matters.
All this builds students ‘ self-confidence and helps them grow into their own person.
By becoming better at debating, students learn how to master their command of the English language. This in turn improves their marks at school across all facets including reading comprehension, creative writing, and essay writing.

It’s a common misconception that debating is simply two sides “arguing against each other”. In the context of debating, an “argument” is a formal mode of discourse built on logic, facts, and emotionally persuasive delivery of words.
In fact, through debating coaching, students learn empathetic listening, effective communication skills, and become more socially adept.
Debating necessarily requires students to stand up to an audience holding competing viewpoints to their own. The very structure of the discourse forces students to defend their arguments, their worldview, their voice against those who disagree.
With time and practice, students naturally overcome their shyness and build their self-confidence.
In order to defend their position, students necessarily craft their skills in mastering the English language.
This skillset naturally bleeds into related school subjects, most notably, English, where students’ ability in reading comprehension, creative writing, and essay writing significantly improve in conjunction with their debating skills.
